GAP Year

What is a Gap year?
A Gap year is a year off from study between VCE students finishing secondary school and taking up a tertiary placement offer. During this 12 month period students often want to experience a work placement relevant to their tertiary study offering.

Features of the VicRoads Gap Year
VicRoads will offer Gap placements to students who have University offers to study engineering (civil, environmental, geomatic, geotechnical, electrical, electronic) on a full time basis for 12 months, commencing March 2010.

A Gap year placement will give engineering students the opportunity to sample working life at VicRoads with a view to attracting students to vacation employment and perhaps a permanent job at VicRoads on completion of their degree.

Gap students will be paid $32,652pa. Students will also be supported and trained throughout their placement.

Further opportunities with VicRoads
Upon completion of the Gap Year, students will normally commence their full time tertiary studies. During their degree, students who participated in the program are encouraged to apply for vacation employment during each summer break.

Pre-requisite requirements for 2010 intake

  • have received a 2010 offer from an Australian University to study any of the engineering disciplines listed above, and be deferring the offer for a period of 12 months
  • have citizenship or permanent residency of Australia

Applications for the 2010 Gap Year will open in January 2010.
