What we do
The Major Projects Division is responsible for:

  • managing the planning and construction of major freeway upgrades, bypasses and significant arterial road improvement projects including road/rail separation projects and shared paths on new freeways
  • developing effective environmental policies and strategies
  • providing specialist advice to VicRoads business areas on environmental issues and management systems.

The total value of current projects managed by the division in 2009/10 is $6.8 billion.

Our structure
Major Projects operates from eight project offices across Victoria. Staff also work in alliance project teams with industry partners at various site offices.
Environmental Services and Major Projects Support, including the directorate administration, are based at VicRoads head office in Kew.


Eastern Projects

The Eastern Projects office is in Cook Street, Mitcham.
The team is responsible for key arterial road improvements in Melbourne’s outer eastern southern suburbs including:

  • George Street Bridge, Dandenong
  • Dingley Arterial link, Keysborough
  • Ferntree Gully Road widening, Scoresby
  • Yarra Glen Truck Bypass, Yarra Glen.


Northern City Projects
The Northern City Projects office is in Cooper Street, Somerton.
The team is responsible for key arterial road improvements in Melbourne’s northern suburbs including:

  • Vineyard Road duplication, Sunbury
  • Plenty Road duplication, South Morang.


South Eastern Projects
The South Eastern Projects office is at Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam.
The team is responsible for key arterial road improvements in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs including:

  • Cranbourne-Frankston Road duplication, Cranbourne South
  • Thompsons Road duplication, Carrum Downs
  • Pound Road upgrade, Dandenong South.


Western Projects

The Western Projects office is at Lake Street, Caroline Springs.
The team is responsible for planning and constructing key arterial road improvements in Melbourne’s western suburbs including:

  • Calder Freeway – Kings Road interchange and duplication, Taylors Lakes
  • Kororoit Creek Road duplication and rail separation, Altona.


Geelong Ring Road

The Geelong Ring Road office is on the Princes Highway at Corio.

The team is responsible for planning and constructing the Geelong Ring Road and future links. The Ring Road is open from the Princes Freeway at Corio to the Princes Highway at Waurn Ponds. Future sections include:

  • Anglesea Road connection
  • Princes Highway connection
  • Surf Coast Highway connection.

This office manages planning and community consultation for the future Princes Highway duplication between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea.


Goulburn Valley Highway – Nagambie Bypass

The Nagambie Bypass project office will be located at High Street, Nagambie.
The project team, together with the Northern City Projects office, are planning and constructing the 17 km Nagambie Bypass and associated Goulburn Valley Highway duplication.


M1 Upgrade (Monash–CityLink–West Gate)
VicRoads M1 Upgrade team is based at Camberwell, with project offices at Mulgrave (Glenferrie Road to South Gippsland Highway) and Port Melbourne (West Gate Freeway and West Gate Bridge strengthening).
The project teams and alliances are managing a $1.39 billion program to improve traffic flow and ease congestion along the 75 km freeway corridor between Werribee and Narre Warren.

The Monash-CityLink-West Gate upgrade involves:

  • freeway widening
  • bridgeworks
  • interchange and access ramp improvements
  • new freeway traffic management systems.


M80 Ring Road Upgrade (Western & Metropolitan Ring
Road)
VicRoads M80 Ring Road Upgrade project office is located at Essendon Fields (Essendon Airport).
The team is planning and managing a $2.25 billion program to improve traffic flow and ease congestion along the 38 km freeway corridor between Laverton North and Greensborough.
Works will involve:

  • freeway widening
  • bridgeworks
  • interchange and access ramp improvements
  • new freeway management systems.


Princes Highway (East) – Traralgon to Sale
This project office is located at VicRoads Eastern Region office in Kay Street, Traralgon.

The project team together with the South Eastern Projects office is responsible for planning and constructing the progressive upgrading of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale.


Springvale Road Rail Separation

The Springvale Road Rail Separation project office is based at Springvale Road, Nunawading.
The $140 million project is planned and managed by an alliance involving VicRoads, John Holland, KBR, Arup and rail operators.

Works include:

  • grade-separating Springvale Road and the Lilydale-Belgrave rail line to eliminate the railway level crossing
  • relocating the Nunawading rail station to the west side of Springvale Road.

The Alliance, together with the Eastern Projects office, is managing the works.


Western Highway – Melton to Bacchus Marsh (Anthonys Cutting)
The Western Highway Realignment Alliance project office is being established on site at Melton.

The $200 million project is being planned and constructed by an alliance involving VicRoads, John Holland and AECOM.

The Alliance together with the Western Projects office are managing the project to construct a new 5 km freeway link and associated bridgeworks to the south of the Western Highway between Melton and Bacchus Marsh.


Western Highway – Ballarat to Stawell
VicRoads Western Highway project office is based at Ring Road, Wendouree.
The team is responsible for planning and constructing the Western Highway duplication between Ballarat and Stawell.


Environmental Services
Environmental Services supports VicRoads business units to achieve environmental management and policy objectives in:

  • water management and use (water quality, groundwater, recycled water use)
  • cultural & indigenous heritage
  • biodiversity (flora & fauna, net gain)
  • noise & air quality
  • environmental management systems
  • site auditing
  • contaminated soil
  • re-use and recycling of construction materials.


Executive Director

George Mavroyeni
George has been with VicRoads since 1978 and has held many senior management positions. He is a Director of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program Limited (ANCAP) and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
 

George has a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) and a Graduate Diploma in Management.
