The second section of the M80 Ring Road to be upgraded is from the Western Highway to Sunshine Avenue. These works have been split into two contracts, from Furlong Road to Sunshine Avenue and from Western Highway to Furlong Road.

The contract for a portion of works between Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue has been awarded to BMD Constructions. The construction works between Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue are expected to be completed before the end of 2012, and the addition of electronic systems will be completed by mid 2013.
Latest construction works between Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue.
Improvements will include:
- Building an additional two lanes in each direction creating four lanes each way
- Widening and strengthening the bridge over Furlong Road to carry the additional lanes
- Resurfacing works to create a safer driving environment
- Traffic lights on entry ramps at Furlong Road Greensborough bound and Sunshine Avenue Altona bound
- Overhead electonic signs to communicate speed limits and lane availability
- Planting and feature walls, creating a new look and feel to the road.
The second contract for the portion of works between Western Highway and Furlong Road has been awarded to Leighton Contractors. These works are expected to be completed mid 2013.

- Building an additional two lanes in each direction creating four lanes each way and five lanes between Western Highway and Tilburn Road Altona bound.
- Bridge widening and strengthening to carry the additional lanes
- Resurfacing works to create a safer driving environment
- Traffic lights on entry ramps at Western Highway
- Overhead electonic signs to communicate speed limits and lane availability
- Electronic on-road message boards
- New roadside features including a solar bank wall.
