To help promote cycling as a great alternative to driving, VicRoads sponsors prominent cycling events.
The Great Victorian Bike Ride is a 500+km, 9-day cycling challenge, taking participants to new regions of Victoria each year. VicRoads sponsors the event and every year enters a corporate team of up to 15 staff. The team reinforces road safety messages to other riders along the route and spends time each day at local schools educating children on how to ride safely.

This event is a call to action for people to ride to work. Many people who are first time riders on National Ride to Work Day are still riding to work 12 months later. VicRoads sponsor this event to encourage more people to ride to work using bike paths and road infrastructure that VicRoads has helped to deliver. VicRoads CEO, Gary Liddle, is an ambassador for this event.
Around 100 VicRoads staff, based in offices across Victoria, ride to work each day.

This year's UCI Road World Cycling Championships will be taking place in Geelong between 28 September and 3 October.
VicRoads is assisting this event with the construction of a temporary 'Bailey bridge' next to the narrow single-lane Queens Park Bridge in West Geelong. This is required to accommodate the large numbers of cyclists per race over the Barwon River. The bridge will be dismantled after the event and stored for re-use elsewhere.

In order to conduct a successful on-road cycling event, there are a number of issues that the organisers of these events need to consider and address. These include:
- the safety of cyclists taking part in the event
- the safety of spectators
- the safety of other road users.
It is important to minimise the impact of the event on the operation of the road network and on local residents, particularly access for emergency services.
Some types of events require the approval of the Victoria Police, local council and VicRoads.
