The availability of secure and accessible cycle parking is as important as cycle routes for encouraging more people to travel by bike.
Cycle parking should ideally be placed in a convenient, highly visible location, with good passive surveillance (overlooked by passers-by). Alternatively cycle parking can be provided in a lockable room or cage within an office building or car park. Care must be taken to ensure that the cycle parking is easy to access the street.
Other facilities such as lockers, changing rooms and showers also encourage more people to cycle, particularly from longer distances (over 5km).
Further advice is available from Department of Transport - Sustainable Transport.

Cycle parking needs to be placed in a convenient, highly visible location, with good passive surveillance (overlooked by passers-by).
'Little and often' is the best principal for locating cycle parking, placing it as close as possible to each destination (shop, school, cinema etc).
Cycle parking also needs to be easy to use, with the ability to lock up various pieces of the bike at one time (i.e. not just the front wheel).
'On street' cycle parking is usually installed by the local council. Contact your local council if you have a suggestion for installing some cycle parking near the shops and services that you use.
The Victorian Government is expanding the 'Parkiteer' program, providing bike cages at key railway stations in greater Melbourne area. It is free to use a 'Parkiteer' cage, once registered for an access card.
To find out if there is a 'Parkiteer' cage at the railway station near you (and how to register to use it), go to Bicycle Victoria - Parkiteer.
