Existing bus stops are being upgraded and some new bus stops built along SmartBus routes. This ensures that passengers have improved waiting areas and safer and easier access to buses.
SmartBus bus stops provide:
- real-time travel information at high-use bus stops
- timetables, route maps and local area maps
- ability for low-floor buses to meet SmartBus stops at the same level, eliminating a step to board the bus
- clear access paths to the bus stop
- tactile ground surface indicators
- compliance with Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards
- facilities that are cleaned regularly.
We are currently upgrading bus stops along these bus routes:
- SmartBus Route 901 (extension) - Frankston to Melbourne Airport
- SmartBus Route 905 - City to The Pines
- SmartBus Route 906 - City to Warrandyte
- SmartBus Route 907 - City to Mitcham
- SmartBus Route 908 - City to The Pines
Kerbside bus stops
Many bus stops are being moved from 'bus stop bays' to 'kerbside' locations. At a kerbside bus stop, buses stop on the road and may temporarily block traffic as passengers get on and off. Drivers behind the bus must not cross a single or double continuous dividing line to overtake the bus. If it is safe and the road is clear, drivers may overtake across a broken dividing line.
Bus stops are designed to Bus Stop Guidelines which limits the use of bus stop bays. By reducing the need for buses to move in and out of traffic, safety is improved and buses can provide a quicker and more reliable service for passengers.
