Federal Interstate registration conversion to Victorian registration

If your vehicle is currently registered under the Federal Interstate Registration Scheme and you wish to use it for local work, the vehicle must be converted to Victorian registration.

Requirements

To change your vehicle from Federal Interstate Registration to Victorian registration you must:

  • hand in the existing number plates
  • fill in a change of number form
  • confirm that there have been no modifications to the vehicle


How to request the conversion
Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 4.30pm). You will not need to make an appointment or have the vehicle inspected.


Fees


The following rules have been made by the State Revenue Office:

  • if the vehicle was registered in your name under the Federal Interstate Registration Scheme on or before 30 June 1996, you will be exempt from paying motor vehicle duty; or
  • if the vehicle was registered in your name under the Federal Interstate Registration Scheme on or after 1 July 1996, you will need to pay motor vehicle duty based on the current market value of the vehicle
