The Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale extends for approximately 47km and is being progressively upgraded as a safer and more efficient four-lane divided highway.
As the primary route between Melbourne and Gippsland, the Princes Highway supports key industries including dairy, timber, paper, coal and gas production. It provides a critical transport link for service industries and to the RAAF base at Sale.
The upgraded highway will improve road safety, reduce travel times and costs, and will assist road freight efficiency for goods and produce transported to and from Gippsland and eastern Victoria.
To date $175 million has been committed by the Victorian and Australian Governments to the upgrade, with works to be completed in stages. Timing of stages will be confirmed as planning activities are completed.
The Princes Highway Duplication is a key project identified in the Australian Government's Nation Building Program

In October 2010, the Minister for Planning determined that an Environment Effects Statement (EES) was required to document the likely environmental effects of the proposed highway duplication between Stammers Road, Traralgon East and Templeton Road, Kilmany. This section of the proposed duplication has potential significant impacts on native vegetation, and flora and fauna species of state and national significance.
VicRoads is committed to protecting the natural environment and recognising cultural heritage. During all stages of planning, environmental assessment and consultation with stakeholders will help identify impacts and issues.
Environmental studies to date have identified significant vegetation along the existing Princes Highway corridor between Traralgon and Sale known as Plains Grassy Woodland. This ecological class of vegetation includes trees, shrubs and native grasses.
Only 10 per cent of Victoria's original Plains Grassy Woodland now remains. These remaining areas are recognised by State and Federal authorities and are protected by the Victorian Native Vegetation Framework, the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, and the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Community members, stakeholders and interested groups are encouraged to participate in the planning of the Princes Highway duplication with opportunities for consultation through public forums, and as part of the Environment Effect Statement process.
