VicRoads works in collaboration with other partners to provide a range of traffic safety education (TSE) resources and programs to prepare children and young people to become safe and independent road and transport users.
Each of the partners is represented on the TSE Reference Group, the coordinating body for TSE in Victoria. The TSE Reference Group developed the Traffic Safety Education: Directions and Action Plan Victoria 2008-2010 which recommends a minimum (core) level of traffic safety education to be provided to children and young people.
Early childhood: There is evidence that children can start learning about using the road system from a very early age. This can lead to the development of safer behaviours in later life.
Primary schools: Prep to year 2 is a key time to deliver TSE as children’s exposure to the road network as pedestrians increases. Years 5 and 6 is another key time as young people begin to develop greater independence as road users.
Secondary schools: Year 10 is a key time as young people begin to learn to drive and become even more independent road users.
The core TSE program in early childhood, primary schools and secondary schools is complemented by an extensive range of other resources which enrich children’s and young people’s learning.
