Recent research into crashes involving pedestrians crossing roads concluded that failure by pedestrians and drivers or riders to observe rules and responsibilities may be a significant factor in these crashes.
Surveys with pedestrians and drivers also revealed some misunderstanding of the rules related to who has to give way when pedestrians are crossing.
As a result VicRoads has developed a set of engaging video and print resources to inform the community about pedestrian safety when crossing roads. These provide easy to understand information about rules and responsibilities for pedestrians and drivers/riders.
These resources are designed for use as part of a community education program that may target specific groups, such as older people who can be at more at risk when crossing the road or newly arrived migrants, or as part a program to encourage walking. Programs may involve interactive sessions with groups in the local community and communications through local media and community newsletters.
The resources include five video animations that explore different road crossing situations that can be incorporated into a community education session and these are supported by fact sheets on the same topics. These resources provide advice on crossings at:
- roundabouts
- pedestrian crossings and children’s crossings
- intersections with traffic lights
- intersections without traffic lights
- midblock locations.
The animations can be viewed on the VicRoads YouTube channel.
Communications materials include six newsletter items that can be inserted into a local government or community newsletter, or used in local newspapers to promote key messages related to different types of crossings. There are also three sample media releases that can be adapted for use by local government or community groups.
