The rules outlined below are an overview, please refer to the rule references for more details.

Regulatory signs
These signs tell you what you must or must not do.  You are committing an offence if you disobey these signs. They are usually black and white, sometimes with red indicating danger or a restriction.  Some regulatory signs are black and yellow: (eg. Safety zone sign and Pedestrian crossing sign).  Examples of regulatory signs are

  • Speed limit signs
  • Keep left sign
  • No left turn
  • No entry sign 
  • Left turn only sign
  • Stop and give way signs
  • Hand held signs
  • Keep left unless overtaking

Warning signs
These signs alert you to possible danger ahead.  They are usually yellow diamond shapes with black words or symbols.

  • Curves and bends signs
  • Intersection warning signs
  • Advisory speed signs 
  • Changing conditions
  • Railway level crossings
  • Pedestrian signs
  • Road work signs

Guide signs
Guide signs inform road users of directions, distances, destinations, routes and road names.

Freeway signs
May be regulatory or guide signs.

Tourist and service signs
Tourist and service signs tell you about the routes to follow and facilities that are next to the road.
