Road safety education for children under six years focuses on the correct use of child restraints and booster seats, pedestrian safety and safe play.

The emphasis is on parents and carers helping their children develop road safety skills and attitudes, with support from maternal and child health nurses, family day carers, kindergarten, and early childhood staff.

The Starting Out Safely program, listed as a key resource in the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework encourage and supports the role of parents and carers in helping their children to be safe in traffic. Age appropriate components of the Starting Out Safely program are delivered through kindergartens, early childhood centres, maternal and child health and family day care.

VicRoads provides a range of other early childhood resources to support services implementing road safety education for young children and their parents and carers.
