Child restraint fitting stations
Child Restraint Fitting Stations have been jointly established by VicRoads and the RACV to help people install and adjust child restraints correctly. They are located throughout Victoria.
Why use a restraint fitting station?
Use a restraint fitting station:
- if your vehicle does not have anchorage points
- if you have a second-hand restraint
- to be confident that you have installed your restraint properly.
Surveys show that 70% of restraints in Victoria are incorrectly fitted.
How restraint fitting stations can help you
Restraint fitting operators have been specially trained to install approved infant and child restraints in a wide variety of vehicles.
They will:
- check that your child restraint is installed correctly
- install additional seat belts (where appropriate)
- install additional anchorage points (often required in commercial vehicles)
- supply and install accessories such as extension straps (for hatchbacks and some station wagons) and sash locating straps (to hold the seat belt away from the child’s neck).
They cannot:
- repair child restraints – this is the responsibility of the restraint manufacturer
- assure you a second hand restraint has not been in a crash and is safe to use. It is your responsibility to make sure the restraint has not been involved in a crash.
Cost of services
Restraint Fitting Stations have been set up to service everyone at a reasonable cost. Customers will only be charged for the cost of labour and parts. Ask for a quotation.
