National Heavy Vehicle Registration Scheme

VicRoads has adopted National Heavy Vehicle Registration Scheme (NHVRS) changes from 1 July 2018.

The changes ensure that heavy vehicle registration functions are aligned across Australia.

No more registration labels

As of 1 July, heavy vehicles no longer need to display a rego sticker or label.

On 1 October 2018, VicRoads will stop issuing registration labels for heavy vehicles. The easiest and most accurate way to check your rego is to check it online.

New number plates

From 1 October 2018, we’re introducing a new, nationally agreed heavy vehicle number plate.

From 1 October:

  • all new heavy vehicle registrations and re-registrations will be issued with the national heavy vehicle plates
  • if your standard number plates are lost, stolen or damaged, you’ll need to replace them with the new national heavy vehicle plates
  • you'll have the option of swapping to the new plates at a cost of $25 per set
  • you still have the option of ordering custom plates.

If a heavy vehicle operator moves their vehicles to another state, they can keep their national heavy vehicle plate.

Flexible rego options

If you have two or more heavy vehicles registered in your name, you’ll be able to choose a common expiry date for them, if you want. That means you can change your expiry dates so they all expire on the same day, and you don’t have to keep track of multiple dates.
