Hire vehicle number plates

VH plates (VHD.004-VHZ.999) are available to all vehicles that are registered to provide booked services only with Safe Transport Victoria.

Previously issued VH plates (VHA.000-VHC.999) remain valid for vehicles providing booked services only.

Note that a small number of plates in both ranges have already been issued to customers as Euro or custom number plates.  These number combinations will remain as custom plates.

Obtaining Vehicle Hire (VHD.004-VHZ.999) number plates

VH-plates are available to CPV registered vehicles providing booked only services. You can check the status of a vehicle’s CPV registration status on the Safe Transport Victoria public register.

You can request VH number plates at your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Fees apply. See number plate fees.

As part of new CPV reforms, special lane access rights for VH plated vehicles will be removed from the Eastern Freeway/Hoddle Street and Tullamarine Freeway/CityLink. All VH plate holders will be advised of these changes.

Changing to Vehicle Hire number plates

VH number plates can be transferred from one vehicle to another, as long as:

  • the vehicle receiving the VH-plates has current registration and is registered with Safe Transport Victoria as a CPV that provides booked services only; and
  • both vehicles are registered to the same operator (person or company).

Any previous standard issue number plates assigned to the vehicle need to be returned to your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Informing Safe Transport Victoria of number plate changes

When you assign or remove VH plates from your vehicle, you must notify Safe Transport Victoria. Visit Safe Transport Victoria to learn more.

Changing to standard number plates

If you have VH plates, but would prefer standard number plates, visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Return your VH plates and swap them with standard plates.

If you have standard number plates, you can request to change your number plates back to VH plates, provided the vehicle is registered with CPV to provide booked services only. If you choose to reassign VH plates that you have previously displayed a reassignment fee applies. See number plate fees.

VH plate style

VH plates have blue characters on a white background, are standard size only and are issued in the following range:

  • Cars: VHD 004 to VHZ 999
  • Motorcycles: not available

You can replace any lost or damaged plates in standard size. Stolen plates cannot be replaced.
