Transfer a vehicle to a trust or different trustee
When a trust purchases a vehicle, a trustee must be nominated as the registered operator of the vehicle. If you want to transfer a vehicle to a different trustee, just fill out the transfer form and gather some key papers, like the Deed of Trust and a roadworthy certificate.

Step 1: Fill in the vehicle transfer form
First, you’ll need to complete and sign the vehicle transfer form (PDF).

Step 2: Gather any relevant documents
In addition to the transfer form, you’ll need to gather the relevant documents, depending on the type of transfer.
You’ll need:
- an original or certified copy of the Deed of Trust
- the VicRoads customer number of the trustee*
- a current and original roadworthy certificate
- the transfer fee and motor vehicle duty.
*If the trustee doesn’t have a Victoria licence or VicRoads customer number, they’ll need to go to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. They'll need to bring evidence of identify documents.
You’ll need:
- an original or certified copy of the Deed of Trust. It should list both the current registered operator and the new operator of the vehicle as trustees, and
- an original Deed of Appointment of a New Trustee along with the original Deed of Trust.*
You won’t need to:
- pay a transfer fee or motor vehicle duty
- provide a roadworthy certificate.
*If the new owner if the vehicle is not one of the original trustees.

Step 3: Submit the transfer to us
Once you’ve got all the right documents, you can lodge the transfer with us.
To lodge the transfer:
- visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre
- bring the documents and forms and your evidence of identity.
