How to update your name
If you’ve changed your name on your record, you must notify us within 14 days.
To change your name, you’ll need to:
- Download and complete a Change of personal details form (PDF).
- Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
- Bring evidence of your change of name and your existing licence and/or learner permit. If you cannot hand in your existing licence and/or learner permit card, there will be a replacement fee.
We’ll take a new photo of you and record a new signature.
You’ll receive your new licence or learner permit in the post in about 7 to 10 days. There is no charge.
What should I bring to change my name on my licence?
The documents required will depend on how you got your new name. Refer to the below tables to see if there are any other documents you need to bring.
You’ll need to bring:
- your photo licence and/or learner permit card, or evidence of identity documents
- a completed Change of personal details form (PDF)
- original documents depending on the circumstances of your name change.

How to update your gender
We keep your gender and title on record for identification purposes. However, these details don't show on your licence or learner permit.
You can change your gender in our records by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and bringing with you:
- your new birth certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM)
- if you were born outside Victoria, you'll need a recognised details certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Changed your name and your gender?
You will need to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and bring with you:
- your new birth certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM)
- an original letter of verification issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM)
If you've changed your appearance as well, you'll need a new photo taken at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
We'll then issue you with a new learner permit or licence.
