Types of modifications
Modifications can range from simple upgrades like a paint job, to more complex enhancements such as an engine change and even full conversions.
Depending on your modification, you may need to notify us and get a vehicle inspection. Before reaching out to us, see vehicle standards on the Transport Victoria website to check what’s required.

Before making changes
Before you make any modifications to a vehicle, make sure you:
- Check compliance: Make sure your modifications meet vehicle standards.
- Stay roadworthy: Don't make changes that make your vehicle unroadworthy or non-compliant (such as fitting tyres below the minimum specified on the tyre placard).
After making changes
After making modifications to your vehicle, let us know within 14 days by:
- completing and submitting a Change of vehicle details form (PDF)
OR - visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
If the only modification to your vehicle is a change of colour, then all you need to do is call us.
Depending on the modification and type of vehicle, we may ask you to provide documentation about the change. The section below lists the requirements for the different types of modifications.
VASS approval certificate and VicRoads inspection
Some modifications need a vehicle assessment signatory scheme (VASS) approval certificate and a VicRoads inspection.
Find out which modifications or vehicles need a VASS approval certificate.
Once you’ve got your VASS certificate, bring your vehicle and certificate to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre for inspection.
If you don’t need a VASS certificate, you can just bring your vehicle to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre for inspection.
Changing your heavy vehicle description
Complete the Description of vehicle/nomination form (PDF) for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes if you want to:
- let us know about a change in your vehicle's description
- nominate a different use for your vehicle.
