Vehicle hire number plates

Vehicle hire (VH) plates (VHD.004-VHZ.999) are number plates for commercial passenger vehicles (CPV) that provide bookable services only (e.g. limousines and minibuses).

1. First, you need to check the status of your vehicle’s CPV registration on the Safe Transport Victoria public register. VH plates are only available to CPV registered vehicles which provide booked services only.
2. Visit us at your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre to request VH number plates.
3. Pay the vehicle hire number plate fees.

If you have previously issued VH plates (VHA.000-VHC.999), these are still valid. You can keep these on your vehicle if you still provide booked services only.  

When you assign or remove VH plates from your vehicle, you must notify Safe Transport Victoria. Visit Safe Transport Victoria to learn more.

VH number plates can be transferred from one vehicle to another, as long as:

• the vehicle receiving the VH plates is currently registered with Safe Transport Victoria as a CPV that provides booked services only
• both vehicles are registered to the same operator (person or company).

Please return any previously assigned standard issue number plates to your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

• If you have VH plates, but would prefer standard number plates, visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
• If you have standard number plates, you can request to change your number plates back to VH plates if the vehicle is registered with CPV to provide booked services only. 
• If you choose to reassign VH plates that you have previously displayed a reassignment fee applies. See number plate fees.

You can replace any lost or damaged plates in standard size. For stolen plates, you’ll need to get new plates. Visit us at your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre for support. 

VH plates have blue characters on a white background, are standard size only and are issued in the following range:

• cars: VHD 004 to VHZ 999
• motorcycles: not available.
