Step 1: Get import approval
Before you import your vehicle, you’ll need to get import approval.
Import approval is managed by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DITRDCSA).

Step 2: Check the vehicle’s eligibility
To be eligible for registration, all vehicles less than 30 years old must be right-hand drive (steering wheel positioned on the right).
Registration requirements may differ for some types of imported vehicles, such as:
- vehicles modified by a Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme (RAWS)
- vehicles that are more than 25 years old (older vehicles).
To register in Victoria, the vehicle must have:
- a current roadworthy certificate
- its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) recorded on the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) as Concessional - Vehicles modified by a RAW
- its VIN stamped, etched or engraved on the vehicle.
To register in Victoria, the vehicle must have:
- a current roadworthy certificate
- its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) recorded on the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) as Concessional - Personal Effects or Concessional - Older Vehicles
- its VIN stamped on the vehicle.
You'll also need a blue modification approval plate and VASS approval certificate if the vehicle was manufactured:
- after 1968 (or June 1975 for motorcycles) even if not modified
- before 1969 (or July 1975 for motorcycles) and has had major modifications, including a steering conversion.

Step 3: Fill out the form and book an appointment
Once you have everything you need, fill out the vehicle registration application form (PDF).
Then you can book an appointment at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
