Age requirements for vehicle registration in Victoria
In Victoria, you can only have a vehicle registered in your name if you’re over a certain age. If you’re underage, someone else will need to register the vehicle in their name. Doing this doesn’t change your ownership of the vehicle.
To register a vehicle in your name you need to be:
- 16 years old for a light vehicle or trailer
- 18 years old for a motorcycle or heavy vehicle.
How to register a vehicle as a minor

Step 1: Fill out the vehicle transfer form
First, you’ll need to get someone (referred to as your nominee) to fill out the vehicle transfer form (PDF). They’ll need to put their details in the ‘buyer’ section.

Step 2: Gather your documents
Next, you’ll need to organise the following documents:
- a statement or letter, signed by you and the nominee, that says they are holding the vehicle on your behalf
- a roadworthy certificate, issued less than 30 days before the transfer (unless exempt)
- evidence of identity.

Step 3: Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre
Once you’ve got all your documents together, bring them to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre along with the:
If you want to change your nominee
You’ll need to get the new nominee to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and bring:
- a vehicle transfer form (PDF) with their details in the ‘buyer’ section and the old nominee’s details in the ‘seller’ section
- a statutory declaration or letters from you (the minor) and the new nominee to say you’re changing your nominee
- evidence of identity.
When you reach the eligible age
Once you’ve reached the eligible age for your vehicle type, you can get the registration transferred into your name.
All you need to do is fill out the vehicle transfer form (PDF) with your details in the ‘buyer’ section and your nominee’s details in the ‘seller’ section.
Then head to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre with:
- the completed form
- evidence of identity.
You won’t need:
- a roadworthy certificate
- a transfer fee or motor vehicle duty.
