Selling a vehicle to someone in another state is a bit different to selling to someone in Victoria. Follow these steps to transfer or sell your vehicle to an interstate buyer.
Cancelling your rego and removing your plates means that you won’t be responsible for any fines or traffic offences related to the vehicle after you’ve sold it.
You can cancel your rego by logging in to your myVicRoads account.
You'll need to take the number plates off the vehicle before you sell it to the buyer. Once you’ve done this, you can either:
If you’ve got custom plates, you can transfer them to another vehicle or keep them – just let us know.
Once the buyer has the vehicle, they can apply for a Victorian unregistered vehicle permit.
This lets them take the vehicle back to their home state, where they can register it.

Make sure you write them a receipt for the vehicle and keep a copy for your own records. There's a VicRoads receipt template (PDF) you can use for this.
Don’t worry if you’ve already sold the vehicle but haven’t cancelled the registration or removed the number plates.
Once the buyer registers the vehicle in their home state and your registration has expired by 3 months, it’ll be cancelled automatically. In this case, you won’t be able to cancel the registration yourself and get a refund.
