What is a motor trike?
A motor trike is a motor vehicle with 3 wheels and no floorplan ahead of the driver.
Common examples include:
- the rear-engined Bontrike
- Can Am Spyder
- Oztrike
- Harley Davidsons fitted with a two-wheeled rear axle.
A motor trike does not include:
- a motorcycle with side car attached
- a motor vehicle with 3 wheels with a body type similar to a sedan, station wagon, utility or van
- a three-wheeled motorcycle with two wheels mounted on the same axle, where the distance between centres of their area of contact with the ground is less than 460mm (these can be referred to as 'Twinned Wheels', which are considered as a single wheel)
- three-wheel agricultural motorcycles or other vehicles
- vehicles eligible to be registered as primary producer special vehicles.

Step 1: Check you’re eligible
To register your motor trike you must:
- be at least 18 years old
- have evidence of identity.
You may be eligible for a concession, learn more about registration concessions.

Step 2: Get a roadworthy certificate
If you’re registering a standard motor trike, you’ll need to get a roadworthy certificate.
You don’t need a roadworthy certificate if you have a brand-new vehicle. A brand-new vehicle means:
- it’s never been registered in Australia
- any kilometres on the speedometer are from the sale and delivery to the owner before registering.

Step 3: Book your appointment
To book your appointment with us, you’ll need:
- the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number
- engine number of your motor trike
- your current licence number or VicRoads Customer Number.
You’ll need to pay an appointment and inspection fee when you book. Concessions are not available.
How to book
Booking online is the easiest and fastest way to get your appointment.
Online appointments can only be booked in a personal name. If you want to register the motor trike in a company name, make sure all paperwork reflects the company as the applicant. You’ll also need to provide a signed, original Authority to act as an agent form (PDF).

Step 4: Attend your appointment
Bring the motor trike and all documentation to your appointment.
You’ll also need to bring tools to either remove or attach your number plate, if you plan to ride it straight after your appointment. Screws are not supplied with new plates.
You’ll need to pay a fee to register your motor trike.
