What is the Learner Permit Test?
The Learner Permit Test teaches you about road safety and road rules in Victoria, and how to be a safe driver. You’ll learn about parking, giving way, and all about road signs and markings. You’ll also learn about managing speed and fatigue (tiredness) and avoiding drink and drug driving.
The best way to take the test is online, as there is a free course included.
Taking the test online
The online course and test take about 4 to 6 hours to complete, and you can take as much time as you need. You can take the course and test on your phone, but for the best experience we suggest using a laptop or desktop.
- Check that you’re eligible for a learner permit.
- Enrol from your myVicRoads account dashboard. You don’t need any prior knowledge before beginning the online course.
- Complete the course. You have 12 months to finish the course once you enrol. You can do the course as many times as you like before starting the test.
- Once you feel you’re ready, finish the course and take the test.
If you successfully complete the test, you’re ready to get your Ls!
Taking the test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre
You can only take the test in person, at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, if:
you want to do the test in another language
you don’t have access to a computer or internet.
This means that you won’t get the online course and will just be taking the test. You’ll need to study in advance and pay an appointment fee.
You can take the test in the following languages:
- Albanian
- Arabic
- Cambodian
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- Macedonian
- Persian
- Russian
- Serbian
- Sinhalese
- Somali
- Spanish
- Turkish
- Vietnamese.
If your language isn’t listed above, you can book an interpreter at your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
What you need to do
- Check that you’re eligible for a learner permit.
- Prepare and practice for the test in advance:
- Study The Road to Solo Driving Handbook, available for download on the Transport Victoria website. This handbook is also available in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Turkish and Vietnamese.
- It’s a good idea to do a practice test.
- Once you feel ready to take the test, book an appointment at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. If you need an interpreter, visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to book your appointment. Appointments require a fee, see our Ls and Ps fees page for more information on appointment fees and cancellations.
- Bring all the required learner application documents with you to the appointment. You’ll take the test and complete the application for your Ls in the same appointment. Allow 45 minutes for the appointment and there may be a wait time.
If you need to take the test again
If you fail the test, you can try again, but you will need to pay a fee.
To avoid this, make sure you give yourself enough time to study the course materials.
If you fail the in-person test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, you can take the test online one more time for free.
